Although it is most widely used in India, the neem tree can be found in Burma, West Africa and Southwest Asia. A tropical evergreen, the average neem tree has a life span of about 200 years and can grow to an impressive 50 feet. Studies have shown that the tree's uses in traditional medicine date back more than 4,000 years. The neem tree is described as a "cure for ailing soil, plants and livestock" in the Upavanavinod, an ancient Sanskrit agricultural tome. Numerous Indian texts going back thousands of years mention the neem tree as a cure for a variety of ailments.
Various parts of the neem tree are used as medicines in countries all over the world. Ailments as diverse as leprosy, ulcers, constipation, skin disorders and diabetes are treated with neem tree bark, leaves, flowers, seeds and fruit pulp. A renowned German entomologist observed in 1959 that the only trees left untouched by a plague of locusts in the Sudan were neem trees. While the locusts landed on the neem trees they did not eat the leaves. This discovery brought worldwide attention on something the Indians knew for centuries, that neem was a natural insect repellent. Neem tree oil can be an effect alternative to the toxic synthetic insecticides commonly used to treat lawns and gardens.
Malaria prescriptions, while necessary when travelling overseas, can have many dangerous side effects, like lowering the body's immune system. Neem tree extracts are especially effective at fighting resistant and toxic strains of the disease. Not only does neem usage boost the body's immune system and battle the malarial infection, neem on its own acts as a natural pesticide and repels mosquitoes.
